Wikipedia: Seattle Windshield Pitting Epidemic

This event in 1954 reminds me of similarities to how our economy's state is reported. The "epidemic" was due to mass delusions brought on by media coverage. The more the problem gets reported, the more the public is convinced there's a problem, resulting in action.
