I take a similar approach, but use another program. In Ubuntu, "sudo apt get install motion", then open "/etc/motion/motion.conf" to change it into interval mode. I also use mencoder. For non-webcam devices, I use a script that calls gphoto2, which also has an interval mode. Have fun! http://vimeo.com/3022797
